FSSAI Registration vs Licence: What’s the Difference?

Complianceer Team · Sep 17, 2026

People say “FSSAI licence” for everything. Technically, India has registration and licence paths under FSSAI.

Registration (Form A (Basic)). For petty/small FBOs with annual turnover up to ₹1.5 Crore. Simpler paperwork. Still mandatory before you sell food.

Licence (Form B, State or Central). For higher turnover or notified categories. State Licence: above ₹1.5 Crore up to ₹50 Crore. Central Licence: above ₹50 Crore and/or import-export / multi-state notified cases. More documents, FSMS expectations, and scrutiny.

Quick rule. Under ₹1.5 Crore → usually Registration. Above that → Licence tier. Import/export or multi-state notified work → often Central even when turnover alone is not the only trigger.
